Why most online courses fail for children — and what actually works
A 9-year-old can't get into your course because of an email address policy. Typography is making reading harder, not easier. And the platform assumes fluent adult readers everywhere. Here's what to change.

Most online course platforms were designed for adult professionals. It shows in decisions nobody documents: a 14-point font, an email address as the account identifier, a wall of text with a Next button at the bottom.
For a fluent adult reader these are invisible. For a nine-year-old in a Saturday coding workshop, each one is a place where the course stops.
If you teach children online, these changes matter most — in order of how much difference they make.
Start with the login
The most common failure in youth education isn't the content. It's that the child can't get in.
Email addresses. A child might not have one. If they do, they often can't access it on the device they're using, don't check it, or a parent who set it up years ago now owns it. Then there's the password. A password created in week one and needed in week two is, for most children, gone.
What works is a single access code the child can enter. Account created at that moment. No email required. No password required. Both addable later if the family wants them.
Two details decide whether this works in practice:
Design the code for how it's transmitted. It gets read aloud by a parent, written on a whiteboard, typed by a child who isn't a confident typist. Leave out I, O, 0 and 1 entirely — every look-alike character is a failed attempt and a frustrated parent on a Saturday.
Don't collect what you don't need. Not asking for an email address isn't only usability. It means you're not holding personal data on a minor that you have to protect and eventually delete. The least risky data is the data you never collected.
Typography is foundational
For a fluent adult reader, font choice is aesthetic. For a child building reading fluency, it's the difference between finishing the lesson and giving up.
Some things that matter:
Letterform ambiguity is real. In popular sans-serifs, capital I, lowercase l and the digit 1 are near-identical. So are b/d in mirror pairs. Fluent readers disambiguate from context. Children who are decoding letter-by-letter cannot. Typefaces designed for early readers and dyslexia — Andika, Lexend, Nunito, Playpen Sans — differentiate these forms deliberately.
The default size is too small. Body text sized for an adult skimming a dashboard isn't sized for a child reading every word. Larger text with more line spacing isn't childish design; it's legibility.
Let the learner choose. Reading needs vary within a single class. A font and size control in the reader costs almost nothing and lets each child find what works. They'll use it if it's visible.
Read-aloud does more than accessibility
Text-to-speech is usually filed under accessibility, which undersells it here.
A child who can follow spoken words while seeing the written ones is doing something specifically useful: connecting sound to text, which is the mechanism of reading fluency itself. Audio with word-level highlighting — the word being spoken is marked on the page — supports that directly, in a way audio alone does not.
It also removes reading speed as a gate on subject learning. A child who understands how a loop works but reads slowly shouldn't be blocked from the coding lesson by the prose.
And it changes where the course can happen. Lessons that can be listened to work in a car, at a kitchen table, anywhere a parent is — which is where a lot of home learning actually takes place.
Shorten the page, show progress
A long scrolling page with no visible end is defeating for a child. Two fixes do most of the work:
Break lessons into pages by section. Each screen is a completable unit. Finishing a page is a small win.
Show the map. A visible contents list — where you are, what's done, what's left — converts an unbounded task into a countable one. On phones, which is where a lot of this happens, the list needs its own menu.
Reduce what pulls them away
Children recover from interruptions worse than adults. Design accordingly:
Full-focus video. When a video plays, get the rest of the interface out of the way.
Don't send them out mid-lesson. A link that opens a new tab during a lesson is, for a young learner, the end of the lesson. Keep material self-contained.
Show when the course starts. If the group hasn't begun, an empty screen reads as broken. A countdown tells a child — and the parent behind them — everything is fine and when to come back.
Remember there are two users
In youth education, every design choice has a second audience: the parent who paid.
They want to know it's working, that their child has actually started, and who to ask when something goes wrong. Give the buyer their own view — what they bought, which codes were used, who has started — and most of that resolves without a single email.
The pattern
None of this is about making the interface childish. It's about removing the assumptions a platform makes when it was designed for a thirty-five-year-old professional with an email, a password manager and twenty years of reading fluency.
Take those assumptions out and the same course works for a nine-year-old. Leave them in and your content quality never gets a chance to matter.
